A connection to place creates a familial relationship to the plants, animals and land around us and also reminds us of our responsibility to care for and protect what we love. Historically, Oregonians have recognized the value of planning for the future in order to protect our shared values. For example, the Oregon Forest Practices Act, first passed in 1971, was the first law of its kind to set standards for successful reforesting; it limits clear-cut size and requires streamside buffers to protect fish and wildlife habitat.
