The success of past planning and current restoration efforts springs from a clear recognition of our dependence on natural systems and a desire to extract needed resources without causing environmental degradation.
Prior to EuroAmerican settlement, native cultures, such as the Kalapuya, burned the valley annually to maintain the open grasslands and savanna that favored game species, such as deer, and native plants, such as camas, that were staples of their diet. They understood how altering the landscape could benefit both people and wildlife.
